The Republican attack dogs -- this time led by John McCain -- are resorting to desperate attacks with scare tactics that McCain frames with, "We want to know the whole truth about Barack Obama."
They are using "guilt by association" to link Obama with anything remotely negative that they can blow up into what we used to call -- FUD - Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt. Visit the Obama sponsored website, Fightthesmears.com to see the Obama campaign responses:
Barack Obama Never Organized with ACORN
The truth is that Barack was never a community organizer or trainer for ACORN, and he was never employed by ACORN in any other capacity. ACORN was not part of the historic voter registration drive that Barack led.
- Fact: Barack was never an ACORN community organizer.
- Fact: Barack was never an ACORN trainer and never worked for ACORN in any other capacity.
- Fact: ACORN was not part of Project Vote, the successful voter registration drive Barack ran in 1992.
In his capacity as an attorney, Barack represented ACORN in a successful lawsuit alongside the U.S. Department of Justice against the state of Illinois to force state compliance with a federal voting access law. For his work helping enforce the law, called "Motor Voter," Barack received the IVI-IPO Legal Eagle Award in 1995.
The Truth about Barack Obama and William Ayers
Here's the truth: the smear associating Barack to Ayers is "phony," "tenuous," - even "exaggerated at best if not outright false."
William Ayers is a professor of education at the University of Illinois at Chicago, with whom Barack served on the board of an education-reform organization in the mid-1990's. According to the Associated Press, they are not close: "No evidence shows they were "pals" or even close when they worked on community boards years ago ..."
Smear groups and the McCain campaign are trying to connect Obama to acts Ayers committed 40 years ago - when Barack was just eight years old. Here's what the New York Times reported on the connection:
But the two men do not appear to have been close. Nor has Mr. Obama ever expressed sympathy for the radical views and actions of Mr. Ayers, whom he has called "somebody who engaged in detestable acts 40 years ago, when I was 8."
"What you won't hear from this campaign or this party is the kind of politics that uses religion as a wedge, and patriotism as a bludgeon -- that sees our opponents not as competitors to challenge, but enemies to demonize."
- Barack Obama, June 3, 2008
Together we can make sure these deceitful and false attacks don't affect this election.
