Hiram Rhodes Revals Died On January 16, 1901, In Aberdeen, Mississippi. He Was 78 Years Old.

Revals Became The First Black U.S.
Senator In 1870, When The Mississippi
Legislature Elected Him To Complete The
Term Of Jefferson Davis, The Former
Confederate President.

Revals Served Only One Year In The Senate
Before Leaving To Become The First
President Of Alcorn State University,
America's First Land-Grant College.
He Also Taught Theology At Shaw
University, In Raleigh, North Carolina.

Revals Was Born A Free Man In North
Carolina. He Began His Career As A Missionary In Tennessee, Kentucky, Kansas And Indiana. In 1860, He Moved To Baltimore Where He Was Minister Of An AME Church. Revals Served As Chaplin For Two All-Black Regiments In The Union Army During The Civil War.

Before Moving To Mississippi In 1866, He Founded A School For Free Africans, In St. Louis, Missouri.
