Shaw University,The Nation's First And Oldest Southern, Black University, Was Founded In Raleigh, North Carolina, On November 21 1865, By The American Baptist Home Mission Society.
Originally Called The Raleigh Institute, It Changed Its name In 1870, To Shaw Collegiate Institute To Honor Its Chief Financial Supporter Elijah Shaw Of Wales, Massachusetts.
In 1875, It Was Chartered By The State Of North Carolina As Shaw University.
The School's Original Curriculum Was Established on "freedom theology" And Biblical Interpretation. Within Fifteen Years, However, Shaw Broadened Its Curriculum To Include The Liberal Arts.
