Lionel Richie:

Grammy Award-Winning Singer, Academy Award-Winning Songwriter, Record Producer And R&B Legend, Lionel Richie Was Born June 20, 1949, In Tuskegee, Alabama.

After Graduating From High School In Joliet, Illinois, Richie Returned To Alabama Where He Attended Tuskegee Institute On A Tennis Scholarship.

Before Graduating With A Degree In Economics, He And His College Buddies Formed A Music Group And Called Themselves The Commodores. Richie Became Lead Singer And Saxephone Player.

The Commodores Joined Motown Records Where They Started As A Back-Up Act For The Jackson 5, But Soon Became One Of The Label's Most Successful Acts.

During The 1970's The Commodores Consistantly Topped The Music Charts With A Successful String Of Funk Tunes And Romantic Ballads. Some Of These Included, "Machine Gun," "Easy," "Three Times A Lady," "Brick House," "Just To Be Close To You," "Slippery When It's Wet," "Sail On," "Fancy Dancer" And "Still."

Richie, Who Wrote The Majority Of The Commodores' Hit Songs, Left The Group For A Solo Career In The 1980's. The Albums, Lionel Richie (1980), Can't Slow Down (1983) And Dancing On The Ceiling (1986) Produced Mega Hits For Richie And Made Him A Bona Fide 1980's Superstar.

"Truly," "All Night Long (All Night)," "Hello," "Penny Lover," "Say You, Say Me" (Oscar-Winner), "Dancing On The Ceiling," "Stuck On You," And "Endless Love" (His Duet With Diana Ross And One Of Motown's All-Time Best-Selling Singles) Were Among His Biggest Hits Of The 1980's.

In Addition To Performing, Lionel Richie Also Wrote Several Hit Songs For People Like Kenny Rogers ("Lady," 1980) And The Country Group, Alabama ("Deep River Woman," 1987). Along With Michael Jackson, He Also Co-Wrote "We Are The World," (1986), The USA For Africa Benefit Song.

Richie, Along With Michael Jackson, Prince And Tina Turner, Was One Of The Most Successful Black Artists Of The 1980's. He Has 5 Grammy Awards, 18 American Music Awards, A Golden Globe, 5 People's Choice Awards And An Oscar.

Today Lionel Richie Is Still Recording And Making Concert Appearances.
