'If you build it, they will come', is a false notion that is commonly held by new business owners. It takes considerably more thought and action to find customers, get them to buy what you are selling and keep them coming back for more.

Marketing is crucial to your business bottom line because it takes your services and products to the public. How else will the world know about your delicious muffins or fabulous jewelry line? So hunkering down and making a clear marketing plan is paramount to driving revenue to your business.

Your marketing plan should have 3 key elements included.

  1. Research. Know your target market. Who are the people that will most likely buy your products or services? What are their ages, income, level of education, gender, and so forth. And then, why would they want to purchase your products or services?

  2. Plan of Action. Once you have complied a clear and detailed list of your target market, now its time to plan the actions you will take to get the word out about your business. To effectively reach your target market, try having in place at least 10 marketing activities within your plan. They can include, newspaper/magazine ads, radio advertising, direct mailing, referrals, and brochures and so on. The more diverse your marketing plan, the greater chance you will have in increasing your revenue.

  3. Tracking. Creating a database management system helps you manage the results of your current marketing plans and informs your future marketing strategies. With this system in place, you will know, for example, whether or not your email campaigns are being read through or if your discount coupons are being used. Business growth is a fluid and organic system, your tracking system will allow you to change and grow with your customers needs.

Your approach to marketing your business needs to be clear, intentional and responsive. With laser like focus and a healthy dose of confidence, you can quickly breathe new life into your business.
