  • Politics Is Like Hiring A Hitman
    by Scott Woods inPolitical on2020-08-13

For me, politics is like hiring a hitman. I have values and things I care about. I care enough about them to at least bother voting for 5 minutes every year for one issue or another. And because I care at least that much, I vote for people who align with the ability to realize the things I care about.

I believe our vote is the punctuation of our voice. Without that resounding exclamation mark, I believe our voices are just incoherent noise.

  • Living in a Black No-Man's Land
by Roger Madison Jr. inOur Community on2019-10-28

There are many narratives that define the Black experience in America in this 2nd decade of the 21st century. Our striving over the centuries of our sojourn in this nation is a tapestry of every human experience -- oppression, enslavement, forced assimilation, dehumanization, exclusion, segregation, isolation, struggle, perseverance, achievement, excellence, celebration, mourning, despair, progress, setbacks, lynching, assassination, genocide, terror, self-hatred, low esteem, pride,...

  • Fighting Racism
by Scott Woods inOur Community on2018-10-25

I had a boss who was racist. Not an outright bigot, of course; her toolbox was more subtle than most. We bumped heads a lot over inconsequential things. She frequently couldn’t keep my name out her mouth. Lot of gaslighting. You know…2018 style. I tried a lot of ways to combat or navigate her issues. None of them worked, and that’s saying a lot because I’m really good at fighting racism. But at the end of the day – every day – she was my boss, I had to deal with her, and that was that. Finally I...

K.S.A. who K.I.P.

How many of you stress out over the smallest thing for absolutely NO DAMN REASON at all??  Come on now, raise your hand!!!  Let me see them!!

Yes, my hand is up as well so I can't talk. Well, I can but you know what I mean.

Listen, if you're like me, you wake up and your mind is moving at 100 mph.  Your mind is moving before your body kicks into gear!  Unfortunately, I run through those times when my mind takes me to places where STRESS and WORRY hang out.

Now, don't think that this is for those highly energetic people only! No, no, no!! Even some of the most laid back people in the world will worry themselves sick over absolutely NOTHING!!

IF you're one of those people who tend to have either SUSTAINED worry sessions or Mental HICCUPS where you start freaking out over the little things, then you need to have you to "K.S.A. who K.I.P".  This means that you need to "K.eep S.omeone A.round who K.eeps it I.n P.erspective".

You know, I'm a firm believer that we ALL need to have someone in our life who keeps us grounded.  You know the person.  For this person, it's NEVER that serious.  They can always bring you down off of that emotional high that you have.  They can always help you see the reality of the situation in such a way that makes you appreciate the significance of your well being.

I'm lucky because my "K.S.A. who K.I.P." is my wife.  I can't tell you how many times she's said "They can't kick yo ass! So why are you stressing?" or "What's the worse that can happen?".  You know it may seem non-chalant but for me, it's a powerful de-escalator.  She brings me down when I am stressing about things that may not be THAT important.

Everyone needs someone in their life who is going to help them see the situation for what it is.  Someone who won't let them get so caught up in the moment of something small that they fail to see the big picture.  If you have someone like this, consider yourself lucky.  Who knows, maybe you will be the person who Keeps it in Perspective.
