  • Politics Is Like Hiring A Hitman
    by Scott Woods inPolitical on2020-08-13

For me, politics is like hiring a hitman. I have values and things I care about. I care enough about them to at least bother voting for 5 minutes every year for one issue or another. And because I care at least that much, I vote for people who align with the ability to realize the things I care about.

I believe our vote is the punctuation of our voice. Without that resounding exclamation mark, I believe our voices are just incoherent noise.

  • Living in a Black No-Man's Land
by Roger Madison Jr. inOur Community on2019-10-28

There are many narratives that define the Black experience in America in this 2nd decade of the 21st century. Our striving over the centuries of our sojourn in this nation is a tapestry of every human experience -- oppression, enslavement, forced assimilation, dehumanization, exclusion, segregation, isolation, struggle, perseverance, achievement, excellence, celebration, mourning, despair, progress, setbacks, lynching, assassination, genocide, terror, self-hatred, low esteem, pride,...

  • Fighting Racism
by Scott Woods inOur Community on2018-10-25

I had a boss who was racist. Not an outright bigot, of course; her toolbox was more subtle than most. We bumped heads a lot over inconsequential things. She frequently couldn’t keep my name out her mouth. Lot of gaslighting. You know…2018 style. I tried a lot of ways to combat or navigate her issues. None of them worked, and that’s saying a lot because I’m really good at fighting racism. But at the end of the day – every day – she was my boss, I had to deal with her, and that was that. Finally I...

Render unto Cesar

I am always sadly amazed by the numbers of people I see at the seasonal Tax Preparers. Not to imply that I wish the preparers any ill will; oh no, in fact I know many of them here in my town. They, like me, are just trying to earn an honest dollar. I do however have a few concerns that many of their clients hold some misconceptions about the tax codes that are not being considered.
Part of what makes America Great
is that the laws that govern us were written based on a sense of reality that rises and falls in popularity polls, but holds true over time and is part of the fabric of the country. Small and Home-based businesses form the backbone of what America is and can be. Because of this, special Tax considerations have been enacted as acknowledgment of the importance of preserving this vital sector of the American economy.
The threat then lies in the body of people who are unaware that the government is totally willing to allow any of its citizens to have a go at owning and operating a small business and receive financial help/subsidies for their effort. The consequence then is that; fewer people try their hands at business because they think they need the big loans, never realizing there is another approach that, while maybe taking longer, is equally effective. Start small, at home and build gradually as you learn the professional and administrative end of business, as well as build a reputation as a business person. Find out what the seasonal tax preparers know and how that knowledge is powerful to the aspiring business owner.
I would like to help you with the process a bit by inviting you to a free presentation given by a person whom I believe to be imminently qualified to speak to any part of the tax system. When you read his profile, I am sure you will agree. As you research his words, I hope you will possibly have a stronger will to open that small business you have been mulling over for some time now.
No, you can't get everything for free when you want it. What I mean is it takes time to assemble the various parts of the whole. People get paid for bringing parts together, just like you get paid to do whatever it is you do. You advantage is, when you pay for business related stuff, our great government will reimburse you for it. It is a Win-Win for all concerned.
