Distraction and Strategy

English is changing to keep up.  Seriously.  Recently, the sixth edition of the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary knocked the hyphens out of 16,000 words.  Words like Fig-leaf now read fig leaf, pot-belly is now pot belly, pigeon-hole ... you get the picture.  Over the last 30 years the hyphen has declined in usage and this shift is a reflection of the times and how we communicate.

In what areas of your professional practice - should the hyphen be removed?  Think beyond the normal mechanics of the 9 to 5.  How do you start your day; what things are done or not done that delay your burst of creative energy?  Analyze the after hours; identify those pockets of time that have proven unproductive yet you labor the same.

We are accustomed to the intersection of distraction and strategy.  For instance, you’ve either seen or heard about Britney Spears and her less than stellar performance during the MTV awards.  What you may not know is that a young fan, Chris Crocker (19), posted a tearful video on YouTube following the negative press Ms. Spears received.  8 million people watched the clip!  He now has a reality show.

This piece is about you – they’re always about you.  The intersection exists - always will.  It’s Monday — look both ways – let’s keep it moving!
