Black History Month: What is shaping our history today?

ImageThis month the nation will be showered with tributes to Black American heroes.  We will be told of the exploits of inventors, athletes, entrepreneurs, civil rights leaders, and other Black contributors to the fabric of our nation.  These stories are intended to uplift, inspire and empower us.

However, when we read about contemporary Black America, we see a different picture. The headlines are filled with more stories of struggle and suffering than success and achievement.  The stories reflect that Blacks are at the wrong end of achievement gaps -- education, employment, income, health, wealth. Is this because there are no good news stories? We must get beyond Black History Month and a few days of reflection on our distant past, and recognize our legacy today as it is unfolding.  Are there stories to uplift, inspire, and empower us now?

We must ask contemporaneously, "What is shaping our history today?"

In an article titled, Never Failing to Find Failure,
BlackCommentator.com columnist, Perry Redd proclaims,

"There's more to being Black in America than hard times and suffering at the hands of white people."

When others tell our stories, even the good news often gets cast in a negative light when seen from the perspective of those who don't share our history.  As the focus on Black History Month suggests, we do have a different perspective that is often overlooked.  So each of us must look to our own history -- within our families and communities -- to uplift, inspire, and empower us now.

I recently subscribed to a news service that I want to recommend --  GOOD BLACK NEWS - Your Source For The Good Things Black People Do, Give and Receive All Over The WorldThis online news service is staffed by volunteers who see our history unfolding  through the lens of Good Black News. Join the growing GBN community to receive special news, announcements, offers and giveaways directly from Good Black News.

Our history is rich with the contributions from our distant past.  Our present achievements make up the history our grandchildren will celebrate.  Let us celebrate our history in the making today, even as we reflect on our past.
