Everybody Wants a Hook Up (Including Me)

ImageSince there are multiple meanings for the term "hook up" let me explain what I mean. As a solo entrepreneur my definition of hook up is getting goods or services for free without paying for them.

Everybody wants a hook up, including me. In fact, this past weekend I had the pleasure of attending my coach, accountability partner and good friend Doreen Rainey's last Get Radical Conference. Guess what? Yes, I got the hook up!


Unlike my definition, my hook up to the conference came at a price. Yup! I had to work for it. I welcomed the opportunity to serve as a volunteer in exchange for attending the conference. It was my honor to lend a hand anywhere I was needed.




Conversely, people ask me for a hook up all the time. They usually come in the form of:

  • help me, I don't know what to do

  • let me know what you think about my website

  • can you tell me how to tweet

Unfortunately these cries for help are followed by things like: "my business has potential to make millions" and "your help won't be in vain". Sadly, they have no intention of hiring me. Don't get me wrong I LOVE to help people. That's why I have been writing this blog for years, providing advice on teleseminars, radio interviews and in no-cost downloaded reports.   


I think people forget, though I am a solo entrepreneur, I am running a business and not a hobby. Any successful business invests in their employees with training, books, workshops and conferences. They invest in their business with marketing, advertising and developing skills needed to to run the business. All these things cost money.
