Baltimore State's Attorney: "We Have Probable Cause To File Criminal Charges' Over Freddie Gray's Death."
I watched with rapt attention as Baltimore State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby gave an update on the investigation into the death of Freddie Gray, the 25-year-old who died after suffering a spinal cord injury while in police custody in April, calling his death a homicide.
"We have probable cause to file criminal charges," Mosby said in a press conference Friday.
Mosby noted that "no crime had been committed by Mr. Gray."
Her deliberate, detailed, courageous and swift announcement of the charges against six Baltimore police officers was in stark contrast to the indecisive delays that have characterized similar incidents across the country in the deaths of Michael Brown, Eric Garner and Walter Scott. Police officers who shoot and kill people rarely face criminal charges, as the law allows them considerable leeway when deciding how to use lethal force if they think lives are at risk.
More importantly, she added, "I heard your call for "no justice, no peace. Your peace is sincerely needed as I work to deliver justice on behalf of this young man....."
This bold and decisive action by Marilyn Mosby is an example for a swift and balanced approach to justice for all involved when police act in ways that abuse their authority.
