Happy New Year! The 7th Day of Kwanzaa -- Imani: Faith in a better future

ImageHappy New Year!

On this seventh day of Kwanzaa, we say Happy New Year with the faith that our collective efforts will bear bountiful fruit in 2013.  Each new year brings the promise of a better future.  That promise is grounded in faith in ourselves -- combined with a commitment act upon our beliefs.

As we craft New Year's resolutions and make plans for 2013, we  must reflect on the meaning of the Nguzo Saba (The Seven Principles): Umoja (unity); Kujichagulia (self-determination); Ujima (collective work and responsibility); Ujamaa (cooperative economics); Nia (purpose); Kuumba (creativity); and Imani (faith).

When combined into action these principles manifest themselves in a stronger community.  The challenges we face are many.  There is no simple solution to all our problems, but history proves that those who are guided by strong principles are more successful in solving complex problems.  Let us commit to live and celebrate the principles of Kwanzaa every day.

THE SEVENTH DAY OF KWANZAA

Imani

Imani (ee-MAH-nee) is the seventh and last day of Kwanzaa. Imani means faith. On this day, the beginning of the new year we pledge to believe with all our hearts and minds in our people, our parents, our good and dedicated teachers and leaders, and in the greater good of the work we do with and for one another, for the community and for the PEOPLE.
